Call Schedule

During the first year of residency, call is rotation-dependent and may be as frequent as every fourth night for services who utilize overnight call. Our program adheres strictly to the mandate of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education permitting time away from hospital duties at regular intervals. During years two and three, call responsibility is only for our Family Medicine service, regardless of the daytime rotation, and it is on average every sixth night as in-house call.

Work Hour Averages

For the 2011-2012 academic year, our first year residents averaged 52 hours/week. The second and third year residents had an average of 50 hours/week. These hours, while low by many standards, did not impair our residents' learning. Please see the curriculum section.

• Resident duty hours are limited to 80 hours per week, averaged over a four-week period, inclusive of all in-house activities.
• Residents are provided one 24-hour period in seven days, averaged over a four-week period that is free from all educational and clinical responsibilities, inclusive of call.
• Residents are given a minimum of eight hours for rest and personal activities between all daily duty periods and after in-house calls.
• In-house call will not occur more frequently than every third night, averaged over a four-week period.
• For first year residents, continuous onsite duty will not exceed a maximum of 16 hours. For second and third year residents, continuous onsite duty (including in-house call) will not exceed 24 consecutive hours for new patient encounters; however, these second and third year residents may remain on duty in-house for up to 4 additional hours to ensure continuity of care of their patients.
• Resident call hours from home are not counted as part of the 80-hour work week. If a resident is called in to the hospital, the time spent working in the hospital is counted toward the 80-hour work limit.
